THE CANTERBURY TOURS

Take a tour of Canterbury or Whitstable with a difference

If you are a photographer, whether an amateur, professional or just enjoying taking pictures for your own pleasure, then you'll have experienced that frustrating feeling. You know the one where you sign up for a tour and the guide won't stop for more than 2 mins at each place! By the time you've set up the perfect picture, they are a mile down the road at the next stop.

With this thought in mind, the Canterbury Tours designed the Photographic Tours. Led by your guide, John, these are highly personalised and individual tours where you can accompany John around the sights of Canterbury and Whitstable with your camera and not feel rushed. As a published photographer, John loves to take pictures and knows what makes a good shot. He will advise you and guide you to some amazing places where you won't feel pressured into snapping that quickie picture. Instead you'll find a naturally humorous, outgoing guide who shares your passion for photography, who will stand there taking shots with you and listen to your ideas.

Our photographic tours are bespoke, we rarely visit the same places twice and adjust the routes to suit the type of pictures that you want to take. Whether its navigating the busy streets and the quiet side roads to capture some real life or if you prefer the beautiful architecture that Canterbury has to offer. If you long to take some amazing shots of the beaches at Whitstable and it's thriving Oyster industry, or perhaps a tour that combines both Canterbury and Whitstable, the choice is yours.

What else you should know

As the Photographic Tours are bespoke, we do not offer online booking. Just call us to discuss these trips, we cater for either personalised 1-1 tours or small groups. Pricing is flexible. Whether you're a hobbyist photographer, enjoy taking pics with your smartphone, or someone who wants to learn a new techniques, this tour is perfect for you. If you have a Digital SLR, we'll learn about (M) Manual Mode, (S) Shutter Priority Mode, and (A) Aperture Priority Mode, and learns what is the best for the situation or shot.

Together we'll take some great shots of this beautiful medieval city by night, and discover some of the history of the city on the way, in a friendly and light-hearted way. All the guests I have had so far, have had a fabulous time, and are now enthused and inspired in night-time photography.

Please bring a tripod if you have one (as long exposures over 30 seconds require a steady hand) If you have a remote shutter release bring that too, and warm gloves as it can get very cold at night. I will bring my own tripod and shutter release just in case you need them.

If you have any questions please use the contact form and I will be happy to help.

The hidden city of Canterbury is a very interesting tour. John succeeds well in striking the right balance between providing information and humor. Things you would never notice yourself in the city center is revealed by John in a very entertaining manner. The two hours pass in a breeze.

If you're looking for a local tour guide as we were John Hippisley is your "go too" guy. We had been visiting Canterbury from the U.S. for 1 week before we contacted John. That was a big mistake. What we learned from John on his tour we could have enjoyed throughout the entire week we were there. His knowledge of the city's history combined with his British humor made for a very entertaining and informative afternoon. If your in the market for an education and having a good time while getting it we highly recommend this jolly fellow. Patrick & Darlene, Nevada, USA

Discolew - Jul 2018 - Funny and informative!

An upbeat and very interesting ghost tour! It unravels some seriously gruesome facts that lie beneath the beauty of the city. John's knowledge is amazing and I will definitely be booking on one of his other tours next time I visit. This is definitely a must do for Canterbury visitors!

I spent two informative hours with John. He shared his stories of Canterbury's history, peppering it with (Website hidden by Airbnb) about the origin of many of our English 'sayings', eg 'knock on wood'. Very worthwhile and friendly tour which included not only the outside of buildings but occasionally the history within. Thank you John

Stacey, Kent - Interesting!

This was my first ghost tour and I went with my husband to celebrate our anniversary. It was just ourselves and John but he was fun and informative and his knowledge was incredible. We went on an evening tour of Canterbury and I would like to have gone in the buildings for a proper nose and perhaps experience some ghostly encounters but obviously they were closed. Would definitely recommend to others, thank you for the experience.ur regular trips we book an obligatory ghost tour. This was one of the best. We had a great fun tour with John. We all enjoyed it and laughed and laughed. He was very entertaining for us as a group of 12 adults although some might take umbridge as it’s sometimes near the ‘knuckle’ -but comedians often are. (But I believe he adapts the dialogue according to who’s in the group). He also kindly arranged a restaurant for a meal after the tour. - A great fun experience.
